With 20 year old Raheem Sterling signing a deal of £49m with Manchester City from Liverpool earlier this month, he became most The Expensive English Player of all time. While the transfer season is still on and there might still be more expensive dealings to come in the coming months, here is a list of top 10 most expensive EPL transfers signings that two English Premier League Clubs have ever made in the history of the league.
1) Fernando Torres - Liverpool to Chelsea, £50m, January 2011
Fernando Torres
While, Sterling might be the most expensive “English” player that two EPL clubs have agreed upon, he is not the most expensive, back in 2011 Liverpool FC had made another such deal with London based club Chelsea where had signed Spaniard Fernando Torres for 50 million Euros.
2) Raheem Sterling - Liverpool to Manchester City, £49m, July 2015
Raheem Sterling
As mentioned, Sterling is the second most expensive player that Liverpool FC has sold, earlier this month Liverpool sold 20 year old Raheem to Manchester City for 49 million Euros. But looking at how Torres’s career was a failure with the Blues, one can only hope Sterling can get his act together and not just be another expensive transfer who fails to make a difference for the club.
3) Juan Mata - Chelsea to Manchester United, £37.1m, January 2014
Juan Mata
In 2011 Spaniard Juan Mata had joined Chelsea on a very promising note and was named Chelsea’s player of the year two years in a row (2011 and 2012), but with arrival of Jose Mourinho in 2013, the Spaniard saw himself being transferred to Manchester United mid English Premier League season in 2013-14. The deal was sealed for 37 million Euros last year in January.
4) Andy Carroll - Newcastle to Liverpool, £35m, January 2011
Andy Carroll
With Chelsea’s 50 million Euros in Liverpool’s pocket back in 2011, the club had splurged 35 million Euros of it on Newcastle’s Andy Carroll but after scoring just 11 goals in 58 matches, it turned out that not only was Carroll not to manager Brendan Rodgers’ liking but also one of the biggest disaster for Liverpool. He was then soon sent out to West Ham in the summer of 2012, after spending just a year with the club.
5) Dimitar Berbatov - Tottenham to Manchester United, £30.75m, September 2008
Dimitar Berbatov
Mata was not the only one that United spent millions on, back in 2008, even while boasting of one of the most formidable forward line of the ear, the club had spent 30.75 million Euros on Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov, who at that time had made a name for himself with Tottenham Hotspurs. After moving to Manchester United Berbatov continued his impressive EPL run and was named in PFA’s team of the year in 2010-11, he even shared the Premier League Golden Boot award after scoring 21 goals that same season, but even with all these success, the striker was unable to secure a spot in team’s starting line up and soon moved out of the club in 2012.
6) Rio Ferdinand - Leeds to Manchester United, £30m, July 2002
Rio Ferdinand
Before Sterling, English defender Rio Ferdinand was the most expensive ‘English’ player in EPL for 13 years. Back in 2002, Ferdinand had moved to Manchester United from Leeds for 30 million Euros and the transfer was one of the most successful signings that the club had ever made, in his 12 years with United Ferdinand made a total of 453 appearances and other than an eight-month ban back in 2004 for a missed drugs test, had a blemish free career with the Old Trafford club.
6-7) Luke Shaw - Southampton to Manchester United, £30m, June 2014
Luke Shaw
20 year Luke Shaw was a big signing for Manchester United from Southampton last season. Though the youngster was plagued with injuries majority of the last season, the amount appearances that the young Englishman made for United last season will be good enough to keep an eye on him this season and see if the youngster makes it or breaks it in United.
8) Romelu Lukaku - Chelsea to Everton £28m, July 2014
Romelu Lukaku
Though Lukaku only made one appearance for the Blues and was mostly out on loan, the Belgium striker was still sold out to Everton on a record fee after three years with the Club. He too would be an interesting player to watch out this season though he had a dip in his performance last season.
8-9) Wilfried Bony - Swansea to Manchester City £28m, January 2015
Wilfried Bony
Besides Sterling, Manchester City had made a also made another huge investment earlier this year, The Citizens had invested 28 million Euros for Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony, who though had a tough start at English Premier League initially he made an impressive come back and scored 34 goals in his 70 appearances for Swansea. He would be another player to a keep an eye on this season in Manchester City.
10) Marouane Fellaini - Everton to Manchester United 27.5m, September 2013
Marouane Fellaini
Fellaini was one of the last few signings for Manchester City’s old manager David Moyes, though the Belgian was not able to do much under Moyes leadership due to a season riddled with injuries and bad form, under new manager Louis Van Gal his performance did pick up a bit and he became a important player for the Dutch, but looking at Manchester United’s new signings and bench strength so far, it’s highly unlikely Fellani would make the starting lineup this season.
