5 most expensive bowling figures in Big Bash League: Sometimes even the best bowlers in the world have a really off day on the field. Sometimes despite bowling well in overall context, they either go wicketless or are taken for lots of runs. In the T20 format, the bowlers have to be at their best at all times, else they will be taken for runs.
With today’s bats becoming bigger and heavier and batsmen gaining and inventing newer shots, bowlers in T20 ar bound to go for runs and in the same vein, here are the 5 most expensive spells in BBL history:
5. Ben Cutting (Brisbane Heat) – 3.3 overs 0/51 vs Melbourne Renegades
Brisbane Heat all-rounderBen Cutting lies in the 5th place for the most expensive figures in BBL. His figures of 3.3 overs – 51 runs and no wickets came against Melbourne Renegades. Melbourne Renegades scored 210/3 in 20 overs. Captain Aaron Finch hit 81 while English wicketkeeper Jos Buttler hit 81 with Ben Rohrer hit 34 off 11 balls with him giving special treatment to Cutting in the final few overs.
Brisbane Heat tried their best to chase down the total, with Ben Cutting making some amends for his bowling by making 40 off 19 balls including 5 sixes. But Heat could only make 153 runs.
4. Chris Tremain (Sydney Thunder) – 4 overs 0/53 vs Brisbane Heat
Sydney Thunder speedster Chris Tremain’s 53 runs in his 4 overs against Heat in BBL 2013-14 is the 4th worst figures in BBL annals.
Heat batted first and thanks to 56 from Chris Lynn scored 165 runs. Despite Dirk Nannes taking 3/21, Tremain getting hit all over the park in last overs was punctuated with Ben Cutting hitting him for 3 sixes in his last 2 overs. Chasing the total, Thunder could make only 117 runs with Mike Hussey making 56 and Heat’s Gannon picked up 4/10.
3. William Sheridan(Melbourne Renegades) – 2.3 overs 1/53 vs Melbourne Stars
William Sheridan who played for Melbourne Renegades in BBL 03 is at no.3 for the worst ever figures in BBL with 1/53 in just 2.3 overs, giving him an economy of 21.20.
Melbourne Stars played Melbourne Renegades in the Melbourne derby. Stars made 208/7 with Luke Wright hitting 70 off 32 balls and Cameron White making 53 off 38 balls. But William Sheridan was taken up by both of them for real pasting. Poor Sheridan was hit for 53 runs despite taking a wicket and getting hit for 5 sixes in the 15 balls he bowled.
Jackson Bird of Stars restricted Renegades to just 132 in 17 overs with 4/31. Jos Buttler scored 49 runs in a valiant effort to chase 208, but well short by 76 runs in the end.
2. Kane Richardson (Adelaide Strikers) – 4 overs 2/54 vs Sydney Sixers
Australian ODI specialist and Sydney Sixers’ front man Kane Richardson has the second worst figures in BBL with 2/54 in 4 overs against Sydney Sixers.
Adelaide Strikers hit 182/6 with Craig Simmons’ 46 and Johan Botha’s 41 of 19 balls. Richardson was chosen for special posting in the last 10 overs of Striker innings thanks to Botha repeatedly hitting him for boundaries. Sixers tried their best to chase down the total and scored 159, falling short by 23 runs.
1. Daniel Worrall (Melbourne Stars) – 4 overs 0/60 vs Hobart Hurricanes
Daniel Worrall of Melbourne Stars unwarranted and unwanted record for the worst figures ever in BBL. His match returns of 60 runs in 4 runs versus Hobart Hurricanes in BBL 04 is something that he would like to be overhauled by some other bowler in the upcoming BBL 05.
Hurricanes batted first and made 190/5 thanks to Jonathan Wells’ 68 and Ben Dunk’s 43. Dunk took a special liking for Worrall since his bowling was wayward on that day and gave runs in both the starting overs and when he returned in the last few overs, Darren Sammy destroyed his figures further.
Stars tried their best but fell short by 53 runs, making 138/9, captain Cameron White scoring 62, but Ben Hilfenhaus’ 4/27 broke the back of Stars’ batting line-up.
