His replacement, Sergio Romero recovered well as he struggled at the start and made a key save in the final exchanges to turn away Christian Eriksen’s drive. All five of United’s signings: Darmian, Schneiderlein, Romero, Dephay and Schweinsteiger played in the match.

It was a satisfying way for Louis van Gaal’s team to start the season. United controlled long passages of play after Kyle Walker had mistakenly put the ball into his own net and, apart from a late flurry, Spurs crumbled far too easily after the game’s decisive moment.
For Manchester United, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Juan Mata were given yellow cards for foul play.
For Tottenham, Eric Dier was booked along with newcomer Delle Alli and defender Jan Vertonghen all getting yellow cards.
