The IPL 2016 auctions have thrown a lot of surprises in terms of player salaries. While some of the players went for their base price or something more than the base price, others got relatively high money when it comes to their base value.

— Rising Pune Super Giants
The newest franchise in the Indian Premier League, the Rising Pune Super Giants had bought players from the mini auction held from the players who played in the Chennai and Rajasthan teams. They brought Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Steven Smith, MS Dhoni and R Ashwin in that auction.

- Kevin Pietersen – 3.5 cr
- Mitchell Marsh – 4.8 cr
- Murugan Ashwin – 4.5 cr
— Gujarat Lions
Gujarat Lions is the second newest team in the IPL along with the Pune team. This is the first team from the region of Gujarat and hence has the support of many people. They also dipped hands in the mini auction and bought Dwayne Smith, Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina, Brendon McCullum and James Faulkner.

- Praveen Kumar – 3.5 cr
- Dhawal Kulkarni – 2 cr
- Dinesh Kartik – 2.3 cr
— Royal Challengers Bangalore
One of the highest spending franchisees in the history of IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have been known to go after the players that they want, no matter what the price. They retained the core players of them team. They retained Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, Mitchell Starc and Varun Aaron amongst other players.

- Stuart Binny – 2 cr
- Travis Head – 50 lakh
— Kolkata Knight Riders:
KKR has been a franchisee that didn’t look too interested in buying players since they have gone with mostly the same team in the last 3 years. All they needed was a handy all-rounder in order to fill the void left by the retirement of Jacques Kallis. They did that by buying John Hastings in the auction.
They had retained Robin Uthappa, Gautam Gambhir, Manish Pandey, Shakib-Al-Hasan, Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell from their last year’s team.

- Ankit Rajpoot – 1.5 cr
- John Hastings – 1.3 cr
— Kings XI Punjab
The Kings XI Punjab team ended on the last spot in the previous edition of the IPL in 2015. They were the finalists in the 2014 edition. Hence, they decided to change their team a bit and invest in some quality bowlers.
They retained Wriddhiman Saha, M, Vijay, Manan Vohra, Glen Maxwell and David Miller from their previous squad. They, however, had to deal with the retirement of Virender Sehwag, who will return as a mentor for them.

— Delhi Daredevils
Delhi Daredevils proved to be the other big spenders in this auction. They had retained Shreyas Iyer, JP Duminy, Mohd.Shami and Zaheer Khan. But they still went for a fast bowling all-rounder and a wicketkeeper, after they let go Dinesh Karthik.

— Mumbai Indians
Mumbai has been the most solid team probably after the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. They have a phenomenal record and under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, they have become a force to reckon with. Mumbai retained their core players of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Ambati Rayudu and surprisingly, Parthiv Patel.

- Krunal Pandya – 2 cr
- Tim Southee– 2.5 cr
— Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderbad is still looking to find their feet in the league and have reached the final four stages once. They have retained some players like David Warner, Kane Williamson, Eoin Morgan, Shikhar Dhawan. But they hit the jackpot in buying Yuvraj Singh and Ashish Nehra and will hope for a better performance this year.
