India won the first T20I against Zimbabwe by 54 runs. This was the first T20 international of a 2 match series. India has already won the ODI series 3-0 despite a valiant fight from a spirited Zimbabwe team.
India had batted first after winning the toss in the first T20I. Indian openers Murli Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane had no problems in manipulating the field for easy runs and kept a good run rate after a tight couple of overs at the beginning.
They made 64 runs in 6 overs before Vijay was dismissed in the 7th over and Rahane followed suit 18 runs later. Some tight bowling from Graeme Cremer who gave away just 20 runs in his 4 overs and picked up a wicket, meant India had to struggle in the middle overs. But Robin Uthappa (39*), Manish Pandey (19) and Stuart Binny (11) made sure that India finished on a total that was just out of reach of the Zimbabwe batsmen. India made 178/5 in their 20 overs.
Zimbabwe’s Chris Mpofu took 3 wickets for 33 runs and was ably supported by Graeme Cremer and Prosper Utseya who kept the Indian batting in check.
Zimbabwe had the batting firepower to overhaul the total, but could they really do it was the million dollar question. Zimbabwe started with caution with Hamilton Masakadza (28) and Chamu Chibhabha (23) making 55 runs in 8 overs for the opening stand.
India’s debutant fast bowler Sandeep Sharma had a not so good outing, as he went for 15 runs in his first over. Where as Mohit Sharma was the most frugal of the bowlers. The stars however were the Indian spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Axar Patel.
Both of them bowled in tandem and began to increase the pressure on the Zimbabwean batsmen ball by ball. Axar Patel picked up 3 wickets for 17 runs and Harbhajan took 2/29 as Zimbabwe batting crumbled facing quality spin.
Zimbabwe managed to make 124/7 in their 20 overs. India won the match by 54 runs and Axar Patel was named the Man of the match for his 3/17 on T20I debut.
