Match Preview:
Peru with a win against Haiti and are standing at the top of the table in the group B, and today they will face Ecuador in their second group stage fixture. Well, they have a good record in the previous versions of the tournament and stood 3rd in 2011 and in 2015 respectively. And this time also, they have a golden chance to make through the knockouts if they win against Ecuador, on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Paolo Guerrero after scoring the winning goal for the Peruvians in the 27th minute against Haiti also became the highest goal scorer with 27th goals for his country till date. Guerrero was also the top scorer in the 2011 Copa America with four goals. He can be the difference in today’s game as he has 10 goals in the last three Copa America tournaments.
It was very much unfortunate for Ecuador that the goal scored in the 68th minute by Miller Bolanos in the 68th minute was nullified by the referee and the match ended without a goal. If that goal had been counted they would have topped the table along with Peru. However, despite Brazil being a very skillful and a team of stars, Ecuador had the lion’s share in the match on a particular day and didn’t give them the authority to fulfill their strategies. Now, Ecuador needs to win this game any cost if they want to stay in Brazil and Haiti or at least a draw to keep themselves in the hunt for the knockouts. Team coach Gustavo Quinteros said that he was pleased with the performance of the players Carlos Gruezo, Esteban Dreer and Arturo Mina, and is looking forward to the game against Peru with the same mindset as they played against Brazil.
